Gobal Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction 2022

Amid COVID-19 situation, disasters have continued to affect disproportionally to disadvantageous groups including the persons with disabilities.  CUAPWD through her Board Chair, partcipated in this years GPDRR 2022, in order to drive the message of Disability Inclusion, share contextual experiences and network with other orgainzations and leaders in the area of Disaster Risk Reduction.

Government of Bangladesh has taken strong initiatives to promote inclusive disaster risk reduction after applying SFDRR. “Dhaka Declaration” was adopted in December 2015 and the evolved version of “Dhaka Declaration+” was adopted in May 2018 through International Conference on Disability and Disaster Risk Management. Article 59 of Chair’s Summary in GPDRR 2017 pointed out “The Global Platform recognized the importance of the Dhaka Declaration on Disability and Disaster Risk Management as practical guidance”. In the GPDRR , Bangladesh organized the Side Event. Reflecting on the discussions, Article 37 of Co-Chair’s Summary stressed the importance of implementation for local inclusive practices by each stakeholder.

Session objectives

  1. Review the global progress and local actions of implementation of Dhaka Declaration as well as different initiatives in inclusive DRR amid pandemic situations
  2. Share an innovative and integrated approach of different stakeholders’ experiences and challenges of inclusive disaster risk management
  3. Demonstrate global good practices on inclusive disaster risk reduction planning, response, and reconstruction
  4. Extract key elements and strategies for moving forward to achieve the goals of SFDRR and SDGs through the action of Dhaka Declaration

Training on Eyecare

Leaders of Organizations of Persons with Disabilities in 7 Divisions of CUAPWD, in the North West region, were tranined with knowledge and skills in Good Eye Health practices, prevention of COVID-19, and community sensitizations and mobilization. This happened was on May 25th 2022 at Baptist Centre Nkwen for Momo, Mezam, Menchum, Ngoketunjia, and Boyo and May 27th 2022 at Banso Baptist Hospital for Bui and Donga Mantung divisions.

The key presentations focused on protecting ones eyes, so as to reduce the odds of blindness and vision loss while staying on top of any developing eye diseases such as cataracts and glaucoma.

During the workshop, the leaders came up with ways they will use in order to sensitize and mobilize their various communities on issues around Eye-care and COVID-19

The OPD Leaders are expected to carry on the knowledge and skills acquired to their communities, to mobilize persons with disabilities to actively participate with health care providers so as to promote inclusion.

One’s eyesight is one of the most important senses: 80% of what we perceive comes through our sense of sight. By protecting your eyes, you will reduce the odds of blindness and vision loss while also staying on top of any developing eye diseases such as cataracts and glaucoma.

You can think of regular visits to the eye doctor as “preventative maintenance” for the rest of your body. The eyes are the windows to the body. They are the only place where your blood vessels can be viewed in their natural state without a surgical procedure. With this visual inspection of the blood supply, optometrists can spot many health conditions and vision problems just by taking a glance into your eyes.

In one quick eye exam in can spot diseases such as:

  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Liver disease
  • Brain tumors
  • Macular degeneration
  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
  • Various blood diseases

Healthy brain function needs healthy eyesight. The brain is our most vital organ, allowing us to live complex lives. Considering that your optic nerve connects your eyes and your brain, a healthy co-dependent relationship is necessary. By keeping your eyes healthy, you keep your brain healthy improving your overall quality of life

General Assembly

CUAPWD’s General Assembly held from February 2nd, with the goal of presentation and appraisal of the Activity reports and Financial Statements of the 2021 calendar year and to also have a critical analysis of the 2022 Plan of Action and Budget.

In her welcome address, the Board Chair saluted the efforts of OPD Leaders, Service providers, the Ministry of Social Affairs and other stakeholders, in supporting the growth and functioning of CUAPWD from grassroots to the regional level. She further  encouraged the community authorities, the civil society and the state, to include and work with Persons with Disabilities as they  possess telling potentials. She equally used this occasion to appreciate the steadfastness of OPD Leaders in fostering better quality of life of their peers even in this very difficult moment, where the socio-political crisis and the COVID-19 has brought persons with disabilities on their knees. Yet, “our motto is NOTHING WITHOUT US”, she said; “we must take our actions even more serious than ever before”.

While officially opening this grand annual event, the Regional Delegate of Social affairs appreciated the work CUAPWD and her partners have done in the field of disability inclusion within the region and beyond and called on CUAPWD to carry on with the good work of advocating for the rights and inclusion of the over 200,000persons with disabilities in all development and humanitarian initiatives across the board.

The General Coordinator of CUAPWD also called on the respect of the rights of Persons with Disabilities and ear marked the area of advocacy to be one of many areas of intervention during the 2022 planned activities of CUAPWD.

This event  presented an opportunity to launch CUAPWD’s accessible and dynamic website that was initiated and supported through the efforts and collaboration with the PIRL Project and CBC Health Services.

General Assembly delegates from all 7 Divisions of the North West region made critical appraisal of the activity and financial report, presented by  Central Coordination and this was adopted with a lot of applause. Also, the planned activities and budget for 2022 were adopted following a series of modifications in the activities and budget. The General Assembly ended with availing all delegates present with key strategic documents of the organization, such as but not limited to:

  1. The five year strategic plan
  2. Advocacy strategy
  3. The Administrative policy and procedures
  4. The Safeguarding policy
  5. The Equality, Diversity and Inclusion policy and,
  6. The Communication strategy.

General Assembly delegates were equally drilled on action plan development, record keeping and systematic reporting.

All the plans and successes of the General Assembly were made possible by the Board of CUAPWD whose 5th Ordinary session preceded this General Assembly.  In attendance were  the Board members of CUAPWD, the  the Regional Delegate of Social Affairs and the Regional Chief of Persons with Disabilities and the Aged, as Ex-officio members to the board
