Breaking Barriers: Ensuring Inclusive Support for Survivors with Disabilities

Survivors of violence with disabilities face a double burden—not only the trauma of abuse but also systemic barriers to safety and justice. As we mark the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, CUAPWD demands urgent action to make all shelters, legal aid, and support services fully accessible.

Why This Matters
• 1 in 3 women with disabilities experiences physical or sexual violence (UN)
• Less than 10% of shelters in Cameroon have ramps, Braille materials, or trained staff
• Communication gaps leave deaf survivors unable to report abuse

Our Call to Action
1️⃣ Mandate universal design in all emergency shelters
2️⃣ Train responders in disability-appropriate care
3️⃣ Fund sign language interpreters for police stations & courts
4️⃣ Develop trauma-informed services for intellectual disabilities

CUAPWD’s Work
We’re partnering with women’s organizations to:
• Audit shelters for accessibility compliance
• Create survivor toolkits in Braille & easy-read formats
• Advocate for policy reform, including Cameroon’s GBV law

Inclusion saves lives. Exclusion perpetuates violence.
